Fact-checking: Belarus falsely is in World's Top-10 countries with the highest inflation rate

However, Belarus could’ve been in a European Top-10 countries.

State regulation of prices, introduced in Belarus in October 2022, is of little help, economist Yaroslav Romanchuk says. As proof, he claims Belarus is in the World's Top-10 countries with the highest inflation rate. The Weekly Top Fake team fact-checked his claim.

Yaroslav Romanchuk criticized state price regulation in Belarus in an interview with journalist and video blogger Tatyana Martynova on March 12, 2024.

“If manual price regulation had guaranteed stability and low inflation, then Belarus would not have been the tenth country in the world in terms of inflation,” the economist explained his point of view.

The consumer price index in Belarus increased by 5.8% in 2023. According to this data, Belarus is far from tenth place.

Actually, in the Global rationing of inflation rate, Argentina is leading with 211%, then goes Lebanon with 192% and Venezuela with its prices rose by 190%. Cuba closes the Top-10 with an inflation rate of 31%.

However, Belarus could’ve been in a European Top-10 countries. In Europe, Türkiye is the leader, prices increased by more than 60% over the year. Next comes the Czech Republic — the inflation rate is 7.6% there. And eighth place could've gone to Belarus, which would've neighbored Poland and Austria in the rating.
