Is Belarus the seventh safest country in the world? We fact-checked a post from the Belarus Zdes project

Belarus’s highest position in the major international rankings is 41st in the “Order and Security” category.

Blogger Anton Shabunevich’s Belarus Zdes project reported that Belarus ranked seventh in a global safety ranking, ahead of Poland, Lithuania, and the U.S., among others. However, the authors did not cite the source of the ranking. The Weekly Top Fake team examined major international indices and found that Belarus is not even among the 40 safest countries.

Context: Authorities have announced plans to install 20,000 surveillance cameras in Minsk’s residential courtyards. As of the end of August, 1,000 cameras were installed on building facades. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2028. The Minsk City Housing Authority explained that the cameras are being installed to improve the performance of housing and utility sector organizations. The system will monitor the quality and timeliness of service delivery.

On September 11, 2026, the social media accounts of the project Belarus Zdes, run by blogger Anton Shabunevich, reported that Belarus had allegedly made it into the top 10 safest countries in the world.

“Belarus has made it into the top 10 safest countries in the world! In the updated global safety ranking, Belarus took seventh place, ahead of most European countries and several leading world powers.”

The post also claimed that Belarus was safer than Poland, Lithuania, and the United States. However, the authors did not specify the name of the ranking or the source of the data.

Belarus is far from the top ten in the Global Peace Index, one of the most well-known international rankings. The index uses statistical data and expert evaluations to assess countries’ peacefulness in a broad sense. Belarus’s ranking improved slightly in the summer of 2026. The country ranked 115th out of 163 countries, compared to 119th in 2025. Belarus ranks higher in the separate category of “Societal Safety and Security,” which helps assesshow safe people feel on the streets, at 97th.

Another international ranking is the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index. It is compiled from assessments by residents and experts. Among 143 countries in 2025, Belarus ranked 41st in the “Order and Security” category. Although this is the country’s best result among the cited rankings, it is still far from the claimed seventh position.

According to Numbeo’s Safety Index, Belarus ranks 90th out of 150 countries. This ranking is based on users’ assessments of crime levels and their perceived safety on the streets.

Other international assessments also do not support the claimed seventh place. The Gallup Law and Order Index, which measures residents’ sense of security in various countries, did not assess Belarus. The International SOS Risk Map does not rank countries. Instead, it categorizes them by security and medical risks. This map classifies Belarus as a low-security-risk zone.
