Antifake / FactcheckYesterdayThe head of BT called social network X the most popular in some countries. We couldn't find a single one
The WTF team couldn't find a country where social network X is the most popular.
Social network X is one of the most popular in the world and the top choice in some countries, according to Ivan Eismont, chairman of Belteleradiocompany. The Weekly Top Fake team proves him wrong.
Ivan Eismont discussed the popularity of social network X (formerly Twitter) on "Editors' Club" on March 7, 2025. The topic came up during a conversation about Alexander Lukashenko's interview with American Twitter blogger Mario Nawfal on February 27.
"In many countries, it's the very elite who are on Twitter, including leaders from various nations; it's a unique audience. In Poland, for instance, it's the second most popular social network, by the way. And in some countries, it's actually number one," Eismont said.
Political elites in various countries do indeed use social network X for making official statements. Politicians maintain their accounts there and engage with their audience. However, among the general public, X isn't as popular as Eismont claims.
In Poland, according to various surveys, X ranks fifth or sixth. More popular platforms include Facebook and Facebook Messenger, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok. A third of Poles use social network X.
Globally, X ranks 12th. It is surpassed not only by Facebook and YouTube but also by Chinese versions of popular social networks, such as WeChat—the local equivalent of Snapchat, which is unavailable in China—Douyin, similar to TikTok, and its competitor Kuaishou.
The WTF team couldn't find a country where social network X is the most popular. The highest number of its users is in the United States. However, even there, it ranks only sixth among other social networks.
