Addressing his message at the All-Belarusian People's Assembly on April 25, 2024, Aleksander Lukashenko stated that his political opponents want to destroy Belarus.
"The Tsikhuskis and Lohuskis [this is how Lukashenko refers to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Pavel Latushka — ed.] against the backdrop of discussions about the possible lifting the moratorium on the death penalty — recall, after the last terrorist attack in Russia, they started talking about introducing the death penalty in Russia, about canceling Yeltsin's decree — so both Tsikhuskis and Lohuskis called for the destruction of Belarus, no less. Quote: ‘Belarus remains the last country in Europe where the death penalty is applied. It must be destroyed’," Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
To verify Lukashenko's claim, the WTF journalists found the origin of the above-mentioned statement by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. On March 30, a post in English was published on the official account of the leader of the Belarus democratic forces on the social network X. There, Google's built-in language service translates the English words "must be abolished" as Russian "must be destroyed".
But Tikhanouskaya's tweet is not about the destruction of the country. Based on the context, the word "abolished" should be translated as "упразднить" ("abolish") or "отменить" ("cancel").
